The paint on the walls peeled in stubborn, curling strips, and the garbage bins teetered on the curb as if daring anyone to disturb them. Stray cats claimed every corner, arching their backs at intruders and hissing when challenged. Even the air smelled of damp bricks and yesterday’s refuse, a mixture of rot and rain.
