Too Much Stuff
Anyone who has read my work knows I had an unconventional childhood. And unconventional really is just a euphemism for really fucking weird. Biracial white-looking kid, black parents, parents old enough to be my grandparents, agoraphobic mother, blah, blah, blah. Where are all the smart, pretty female lead characters on television sitcoms? As a woman, and as a woman of colour, and as an intelligent woman of colour, that’s something I always wanted to know. I begin this with a disclaimer, I’ve not watched everything on television (I mean, I did have a life). All I know I know is what I’ve seen and what I grew up with. And I know I didn’t like it.

Coming Home Again
When I was growing up in rural Belize, I dreamed of my future while I munched on seeds and berries and went about my day's work. I hung with my crew and we'd often watch the boys. They never really noticed me. I couldn't blame them, I had 2 incredibly beautiful best friends that they liked just fine, Derry and Jo. The boys would dance and carry on, acting foolish, doing anything to get their attention.

There’s no doubt it’s been a tough couple of years. Covid killed millions of people worldwide. Not content with that, it also took millions of jobs away from the economy too. Any government help that was available to cover the rent or face increasing prices has run out, leaving people with little hope. Little hope and even fewer options. For some, the only option is to move back home with good old Mom and Dad.

Making My Mark on the World
For someone who can't stand to be around people, at least generally speaking, I've sure done a lot of jobs involving their lives. I've been a residential mental health worker, supporting, teaching and assisting adults with varying psychiatric and/or developmental challenges in navigating day to day life. I've been a lawyer, helping people through some of the biggest events in their lives. Buying a home, setting up a business, getting divorced, or staying out of jail, things like that. Heck, I've even made people, 3 of them. All 3 made it through childhood without me messing things up too much and all 3 became wonderful contributions to the universe. You're welcome, world.

The day we moved in, I was beside myself with excitement. Finally, a place to call our own. It wasn't much, a modest 1 bedroom in an old school that had been converted into apartments, and rather crudely at that. But after 4 months of living hand to mouth in one motel after another, barely scraping by, it seemed like heaven.
