Harper Lewis interview 2026

Harper Lewis joined Vocal in July 2025. She has written over 222 stories. She has 12 achievements on Vocal.

She has one biological daughter, a son, a daughter from her husband’s previous marriage, and a grandson.

Mariann: Where are you from?

Professor Harper: I was born and raised in Augusta, Georgia, with roots in the Carolinas and central Georgia. There’s more to being from Augusta than being born and raised there, but I never cared about any of that—didn’t take Social, but went out with everyone afterward every week, jumped in people’s limousines, climbed on boats at the lake. I love to go for a ride, preferably not on an interstate.

Mariann: What is your goal in writing on Vocal?

Professor Harper: Growth, Learning, and Community. I love the challenges, official and unofficial. I absolutely love the depth of conversation in dialogue threads. When creators riff on each other’s work, it’s one of the best things about creative communities —the interaction among creative people.

Mariann: Who is your favorite author, and why?

Professor Harper: I have so many authors that I love. I can’t mention Faulkner without mentioning Shakespeare, Homer, Eliot, Auden, Steinbeck, and it goes on and on.

I have favorite playwrights, poets, essayists, novelists, short story writers: Hemingway, Flannery O’Connor, Eudora Welty, Sherwood Anderson, Emerson, Queen Elizabeth I, Matthew Arnold, John Donne, Robert Frost, Robert Pinsky, Wallace Stevens, John Updike, Harper Lee, Frederick Douglass, Maya Angelou, Joan Didion, E.E. Cummings, Alexander Pope, Tom Robbins, Raymond Carver, Anne Rivers Siddons, Pat Conroy, Judy Blume, E.B.White, Ray Bradbury, W, P. Kinsella

I’ll stop.

My favorite contemporary author is Fredrik Backman, and his Beartown trilogy is such an opus and so beautifully translated that I wish I were fluent in Swedish.

Mariann: How many books have you published? What are they about?

Professor Harper: One self-published book of poetry, Pomegranates, a Persephone and Hades collection.

Mariann: What do you want your fans to know about you?

Professor Harper: That I learned to read when I was three, that I swam before I walked, that I waited tables in my twenties and tended bar after grad school, that I have standards about writing and I’m primarily a New Critical/Formalist reader, and that in writing, the work is all that matters. I trained as a boxer in my thirties. I have unconventional beliefs about love. I come from a line of witches that skipped my mother’s generation, and I’m the one who was supposed to be taught the spells and potions, but that great aunt passed before I was considered old enough to learn. I took time off from my undergrad studies from the time I was 19 until I was 25, although I occasionally took a class.

Mariann: Describe your writing space?

Professor Harper: I can do better than that—I can show you. I’ve just put the room together this year, and in addition to being my writing space, it’s where my husband and I play chess. Best room in the house.

Mariann: How do you fit your writing into your daily schedule?

Professor Harper: At this point, it’s more a case of fitting my daily schedule into my writing. I write almost constantly when I’m not playing chess, reading, teaching, or sleeping, but I make time to enjoy spending time with friends and enjoying the wonderful North Carolina outdoors.

Mariann: What courses did you teach at the University?

Professor Harper: English and Humanities are my primary courses with various orientation courses occasionally. Humanities is currently my favorite course to teach.
