A Reluctant Hero at the End of the World

Ryland Grace is not your average middle school science teacher. That’s not simply because he’s played by the impossibly charismatic Ryan Gosling. As a character, he comes with a rich backstory—once respected in his scientific field until a controversial paper got him laughed out of academia.

Now, he’s settled into a quieter life: teaching, riding his bike, and keeping his head down. That changes with a terrifying discovery. The sun is being consumed—and not just our sun, but stars across the cosmos are dimming.

Grace doesn’t fully understand what’s happening, but he knows enough to offer his students a version of hope, even if it isn’t entirely true. Because the reality is bleak: within 30 years, Earth faces a slow and catastrophic end.

Science, Instinct, and Second Chances

The story kicks into motion when Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller), head of an international scientific initiative, discovers Grace’s disgraced paper. While others dismissed it, she recognizes something in it—something that may explain what’s happening to the stars.

Grace is brought into Project Hail Mary and quickly proves his value. His strength isn’t conventional brilliance—it’s instinct. He understands how elements interact and approaches problems in unconventional ways, often building solutions from scratch.

When a mission is assembled to travel into space, Grace is the last person who wants to go. But as circumstances shift, he may be the only one capable of doing the job.

A Clever Narrative and an Unexpected Bond

The film opens in space, with Grace already on the journey. It’s a disorienting, effective choice that mirrors his own confusion while gradually revealing how he got there through flashbacks.

And then, something unexpected happens—Grace encounters alien life.

I’ll leave the details there. This is a film best experienced fresh. But what follows is one of the movie’s strongest elements: Grace forms a bond with an alien he names Rocky, and that relationship becomes the emotional core of the story.

Ryan Gosling’s Balancing Act

Ryan Gosling delivers a performance that walks a fine line between humor and frustration. Grace is cowardly at times, dismissive of himself, and often resistant to responsibility—but he’s also deeply human.

His journey is internal as much as external. He must overcome his own belief that he isn’t brave, smart, or capable enough. That self-deprecating instinct becomes the very thing he has to push through to become the hero the situation demands.

Gosling makes that evolution feel natural. What starts as frustrating gradually becomes endearing, even admirable.

The Heart of the Film: Grace and Rocky

Grace’s dynamic with Rocky (voiced and puppeteered by James Ortiz) is where the film truly comes alive.

Their relationship evolves—from cautious communication to collaboration, to friendship, and eventually something deeper. There’s a real sense of time passing, even if the film doesn’t always call attention to it directly. You feel the weight of their shared experience.

It’s that emotional anchor that elevates Project Hail Mary beyond standard blockbuster fare.

Final Thoughts: Smart, Funny, and Highly Entertaining

Project Hail Mary may not be a masterpiece. It doesn’t quite linger in the way truly great films do. But that’s not really what it’s trying to be.

This is a smart, engaging, and thoroughly entertaining sci-fi adventure. It’s a crowd-pleaser with humor, heart, and a strong central performance.

Not every film needs to aim for high art. Sometimes, being genuinely entertaining—while still delivering character, emotion, and thoughtful storytelling—is more than enough.

And Project Hail Mary succeeds on those terms.
