I recently went to the grocery store and when I was about to go through the check out, a headline on a magazine caught my attention. I couldn't believe it, did you know that Elvis is still alive? (Where have they been hiding him?)

Hedonistic Tendencies
Many people think that because I am a minimalist that I don’t buy anything. By this logic, I must use photosynthesis to make food and water because humans need food to eat, and I’m not hunter-gather. That being said, I do spend quite a bit of my money on food and related items. However, besides necessities, I have a different system besides just “add to cart” before I buy something. Just because I am a minimalist doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy buying things conscientiously. My system includes never using the buy now button and creating lists of the things I want. This list is then reviewed to see if those things I thought I wanted, are still what I want. I do this weekly. Then depending on how much the item is, I will take this system further. This helps me avoid unnecessary spending as well as collecting random items I don’t need. Would you believe I don’t even have amazon prime anymore? Crazy in this day and age, I know. However there have been a few items on my list lately, so I felt that they were a splurge-worthy of sharing with you.

Giving a Voice to the True Americans
When native lands were invaded by foreign Europeans in the 1700s, the people who lived upon those areas were quick to take action. Battles were fought; blood was shed. This may sound like the start of a very interesting movie, but as we all know, it is history. Native Americans were driven away from their homes to designated areas the government had “given” to them. Yes, given. After taking their homes and forcing them to walk miles upon miles chained up, they decided compensation would be provided by giving them land. This type of mistreatment was not uncommon back then, and it is not uncommon nowadays, either. Native people are just like you and I. They have the same hopes, dreams, and feelings as you do, but they are still being treated otherwise. That is the issue. The general public wants to believe reservation life is great, but unless you are there, you will never know the struggles the people face every day. Since living conditions, schools systems, and healthcare are severely flawed on reservations, more must be done to finally end the injustice Native Americans receive in the United States..

There is some commotion going on at the park, or maybe it’s the grocery store--everything is extremely strange and continually morphing before your eyes. You aren’t fully aware of where you are, or if you are even yourself. You can’t see yourself, after all. Where’s a mirror when you need one?

Curiosity, Perplexity, and the Wisdom of Socrates
“I know that I know nothing" - Socrates Plato begins his dialogue, Meno, rather abruptly. At the very outset, Meno poses the following question to Socrates: “Can you tell me, Socrates, can virtue be taught?” Meno believes he has a clear understanding of virtue and what it entails. He even suggests as much to Socrates: “I have made many speeches about virtue before large audiences on a thousand occasions, very good speeches I thought.”

I fought the Law and the Law won.
It's unfortunate that we need rules, regulations and guidelines to live by. Why can't we just do the right thing all the time? Is it because we are all different? Is it because we can't be trusted? Or is it because we just don't care? I don't know the answer to that my friend but what I do know is that we need laws. What would the world be like without them? It's easy to imagine the chaos if there were no consequences to our actions. I would hope that we all want to abide by the law whether we agree with them or not but in some cases, we don't even know that we are about to break a law. That's because some laws make little to no sense and are not obvious to anyone. Let's take a journey into the little know and highly questionable laws that exist, most of which are still enforced to this day.

Like many of us, we grow up trying to fit into a patriarchal world. We’ve been told how to and not to behave – “pink is for women and blue is for men,” they say; women have to cross their legs, cannot show their bodies, their only job is to raise children; while men should focus on their profession and financial success, they cannot show many emotions, cannot play with barbies, etc.
