The Woodcutter and His Loyal Mongoose

On the edge of a dense forest sat a tiny village. At its very outskirts, tucked away among the thick trees, stood a woodcutter's small hut. Though simple, the home was kept with great care. A sturdy fence surrounded the property, which housed a small flower garden, a few cows and goats, some ducks, chickens, and pigeons.

The woodcutter’s family was small: his wife, an eight-year-old son named Rahat, a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter named Mita, and his beloved pet mongoose.

The mongoose had truly become a member of the family. The woodcutter had found him in the forest when he was just a tiny pup and brought him home in his arms. Since then, the mongoose had been like his shadow, following him everywhere. Sometimes he would perch on the woodcutter's waist, sometimes he would scurry around the yard, and often, he would play with the children.

Despite their meager income, the family was happy. Every morning, the woodcutter would head into the forest to chop wood. He would bring the logs home to dry before selling them at the market. What little he earned was just enough to keep the household running.

One day, the woodcutter’s wife fell gravely ill. She suffered from a high fever and dizziness, and her body grew so weak she could barely move. The woodcutter was gripped with worry. With his wife bedridden, the chores, the cooking, and the children’s care all fell onto his shoulders.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks into a month, but her condition didn't improve. Realizing that common remedies weren't working, the villagers told him about a renowned healer living at the far end of the forest whose medicines were said to cure even the most stubborn illnesses.

Filled with hope, the woodcutter woke up early one morning and decided to seek out the healer. He left his wife resting, told the children to stay in the yard, and set off.

He had no idea that a terrifying event was about to unfold one that would change his life forever.

That morning, Rahat and Mita were playing in the yard. Suddenly, their ball rolled past the fence. Rahat ran off to fetch it, leaving little Mita alone.

In the corner of the yard sat a large clay pot used to hold water for the cows. Mita toddled over and began splashing her hands in the water, giggling as the droplets sprayed everywhere.

Just then, a strange snake emerged from the forest. It was what the locals call a “two-headed snake” terrifying to look at because it appeared to have a head at both ends. However, this particular snake was gentle by nature. Suffering from the heat, it had simply come for a drink.

Mita wasn't afraid. To her, it looked like a new friend. She reached out and playfully nudged the snake. The two-headed snake didn't react; it drank its fill, cooled its body, and slowly slithered away.

But the danger was far from over. Moments later, a lethal cobra emerged from the opposite direction. With its hood flared and a menacing hiss, it headed straight for the water pot.

Seeing the cobra, Mita clapped her hands in delight. She thought this one would play with her just like the last one. She reached out and tried to stroke the cobra's head.

Provoked, the cobra hissed sharply. When Mita touched it again, the snake struck, sinking its fangs into her.

The venom spread through Mita’s tiny body instantly. Her face turned blue, her limbs went limp, and she collapsed onto the ground.

The pet mongoose had seen everything from inside his cage. He struggled desperately, hearing Mita’s cry and the cobra’s hiss, until finally, he managed to break free.

A fierce battle broke out between the snake and the mongoose.

The mongoose pounced. The cobra lunged to strike, but the mongoose was too quick. They tumbled across the yard in a whirlwind of dust biting, snapping, and coiling. After a long, grueling fight, the cobra finally lay dead on the ground. The mongoose was badly wounded and covered in blood, with snake bites marking his muzzle.

Exhausted but determined, the mongoose darted toward the forest. It is said that mongooses know of a specific leaf that acts as an antidote to snake venom. He likely went searching for it, perhaps to save himself or to find a way to help the child.

Just then, Rahat returned and saw his little sister lying unconscious, her face a terrifying shade of blue. Nearby stood the mongoose, his mouth stained red with blood.

Terrified, Rahat began to scream, "Abba! Abba! The mongoose has killed my sister!"

The woodcutter arrived at that exact moment, bringing the healer with him. He froze at the scene: his daughter on the ground, the bloodied mongoose nearby, and his son crying that the pet was the killer.

Blinded by a sudden, murderous rage, the woodcutter grabbed a heavy wooden staff and struck the mongoose over the head with all his might. The poor creature collapsed and died instantly.

The healer rushed to Mita. After a quick examination, he said, "These are snake bites. The mongoose didn't do this."

Then, the healer noticed something in the dead mongoose’s mouth a small sprig of leaves. He gasped in surprise. "This is the rare herb used to draw out snake venom. The mongoose must have run to the forest to find this to save her."

The realization hit the woodcutter like a physical blow. He broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. "My friend! You gave your life to save my child, and I killed you in return!"

With the healer’s medicine and the herbs the mongoose had brought, Mita eventually recovered. But the loyal mongoose was gone forever.

The Lesson That day, the woodcutter learned a bitter lesson. He realized that decisions made in haste and fueled by anger, without verifying the truth, lead only to tragedy. In losing his most faithful companion, he learned the true cost of a lack of patience and trust.
