The Selfish Horse and the Price of Arrogance

A long time ago, in a quiet village tucked away near the mountains, there lived a farmer who owned two very different animals: a horse and a donkey. The horse was a beautiful creature, with a sleek, shiny coat and powerful muscles. He was the farmer’s pride, often used for riding into town or showing off to neighbors. Because of this, the farmer rarely gave him any hard work to do. On the other hand, the donkey was small, grey, and dusty. His life was far from glamorous. From sunrise to sunset, he was the one carrying heavy sacks of grain, pulling the plow through the muddy fields, and doing all the "dirty work" around the farm.

Over time, the horse became incredibly arrogant. He began to believe that he was superior to the donkey simply because he didn't have to carry heavy loads. He would often watch the donkey stumble under the weight of massive bags and think to himself, "I’m glad I wasn't born for such lowly work. I am built for speed and beauty, not for carrying sacks like a common servant."

One particularly hot summer morning, the farmer prepared for a long trip to the distant market. As usual, he piled several heavy sacks of wheat onto the donkey’s back. The load was so high that the poor donkey’s legs shook under the weight. The horse, meanwhile, was saddled with nothing but a light ornamental blanket, ready to walk comfortably beside them.

As they set off down the dusty road, the sun began to beat down on them with a fierce intensity. There wasn't a cloud in the sky, and the air was thick and dry. Within a couple of hours, the donkey was struggling. His breath became shallow, and he began to gasp for air. The heavy sacks seemed to get heavier with every step he took.

Knowing he couldn't last much longer, the donkey turned to the horse with pleading eyes. "My friend," he whispered, his voice cracking from thirst and exhaustion. "Please, I’m begging you. I can’t go on like this. The weight is too much for me in this heat. You aren't carrying anything at all could you please take just a small portion of my load? Even one sack would make a huge difference. It would literally save my life, and we could both reach the market safely."

The horse didn't even look at him. He let out a sharp, annoyed snort. "Why should I bother with your bags?" he snapped back. "I wasn't meant to lug around heavy, dusty sacks. That’s your job. You were born for this, and I was born for better things. Learn to carry your own weight and stop complaining."

The donkey didn't say another word. He lowered his head and tried to keep moving, but his strength was completely gone. A few minutes later, his legs buckled, and he collapsed onto the hot dirt. After a few desperate gasps for air, the poor animal died right there on the road.

The farmer was devastated, but he was also in a difficult spot. He was miles away from the market and couldn't leave his grain behind. He looked at the dead donkey and then at the strong, healthy horse standing idly by. Having no other choice, the farmer took every single sack from the donkey’s back and piled them onto the horse. To make matters even worse, because he didn't want to waste anything, the farmer flayed the dead donkey and threw the heavy hide on top of the pile as well.

The horse was miserable. He had never felt such a crushing weight in his entire life. Every step felt like his bones were about to snap. His breath was heavy, and sweat poured down his face. Crying out in pain, he thought to himself, "What a terrible mistake I’ve made. If I had just helped him with even a tiny bit of the load at the start, I wouldn't be suffering like this now. Now, because of my own selfishness, I’m forced to carry his entire load, and even his skin."

The horse finally realized that selfishness always brings its own ruin. A small act of kindness at the right time could have prevented a much greater disaster for everyone.
