About this challenge
The Prompt
Write a story that opens at the edge of a beginning that feels uncertain, partial, or reluctant and avoid resolution.
Beginnings are often framed as decisive moments. This challenge is interested in what comes before that certainty, when something has started to shift but has not yet taken shape.
Open your story at the edge of that movement. The beginning may feel tentative, delayed, or uneven. Characters might sense change without understanding it, or participate in it without fully committing. What matters is the atmosphere of arrival, not the arrival itself.
Avoid resolution. Let the story end in motion, facing forward without outcome.
In order for your submission to qualify, it must be:
- A fiction story.
- Between 600 and 3,000 words.
- Submitted to the Fiction community. Your story will be disqualified if it is submitted to any other community.
- Submitted before March 20, 2026 at 11:59 PM EST.
- Your work must be original and unpublished.
The Prizes

Something Is Beginning, I Think Challenge Winners
This challenge wasn’t about clean starts. It was about that weird in-between where something is beginning, but no one really knows what yet. A lot of these stories leaned into hesitation, into pauses and false starts and that feeling that something is about to happen but hasn’t quite.
