I encourage everyone to listen to the new Album "Exile" by Jamaican Reggae artist Chronixx. This is not a review, but a revelation.

I listen to a lot of music new and old, music has been a hobby and pastime of mine for many years and played a frontline role in shaping my identity as a person.

Not since the days of Bob Marley have I heard a reggae album deliver such a strong and powerful message for the modern times. The album is focused and free flowing with classic island sounds, mellow but also fully consciously aware of the audience without trying to appease the masses. Chronixx vocals match perfectly to the tone and the lyrical depth and message far surpasses anything we would actually expect from this day and age. What they have achieved here is nothing short of a musical saviour.

I didn't even realise I was looking for this album until I found it. Modern Reggae has taken strides to mix with the popular culture and trends of the US, however this album strays unashamedly roots and is all the better for it, whilst sounding progressive in its own right. The album is a major step up and shake up of the current reggae scene, silently taking the lions crown when reggae was looking for the next leader to bring it forward into modern times. There is something for everybody who appreciates classic reggae in this album whilst also sounding modern and as fresh as anything currently out in the market. I discovered Chronixx a few years back and the artist is actually quite well received and popular in the online world. The signs were already there and now the artist has delivered an album which is a true testament to the spirit of Jamaica and a gift to the loyalty of the fanbase.

The standout track for me is Resilient, a 7 minute long ride through the life and Diaspora of Black people across the world, the message delivered in gospel style is powerful, strong, composed and determined until the conclusion.

I need to reconsider my own concept of what I am looking for in a complete album experience, It is often you will pick out a few tracks in an album as the standout reason to listen to the rest, I almost forgot that an album can deliver a journey from start to finish with the right inspiration and talent behind it. There is nothing really flashy either, simple classical instruments flow over environmental sounds which sets the mood, there is no overengineered beats or autotune overpowering any of the tracks on this album and not a single obsurdity or bad language spoken in any of the vocals, just simple purity. I listened to a new album recently from an artist from the UK called FKA twigs which is so unshamedly industry it is hard to believe there is any creative input from the artist at all. Each to their own and the genres are completely different but this is the direction of modern pop music which for all the catchy hooks and shock value sadly lacks any meaningful substance long term and feels incoherent in the message they are trying so hard to push.

Vinyl in modern day is a bit of a rich mans game, no longer is it the cheaper option for those looking to save a bit of money using an older style format, very rare do you see a vinyl go for much cheaper than asking price, especially one which is popular. However, if ever I would put my money on a physical future classic it would be on this album. The album is likely to become a rarity in the vinyl wilds in years to come.

Exile is an unassuming listening experience and true modern masterpiece for those looking to take a step back and remember the simple things about music.
